The late University of Namibia (UNAM)’s Pro-Vice-Chancellor, Professor Keto Mshingeni, has been hailed as a man of exceptional intellect and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge.

Professor Mshingeni died on the 22nd of this month in Tanzania.

He played a crucial role in shaping the University of Namibia’s academic programmes, research direction, and institutional systems.

Tanzania’s High Commissioner to Namibia, Caesar Waitara, described him as a visionary leader whose dedication to education inspired generations and strengthened the university.

“Professor Mshingeni was a man of exceptional intellect and unwavering commitment to the pursuit of knowledge. His contribution to science, particularly in marine biology, earned him a place among Africa’s most respected scholars. Over the course of his career, through research, teaching, and mentorship, he not only advanced scientific understanding but also inspired generations of students and academics across the continent and beyond. There is no more fitting place to honour him than within the walls of the university.”

UNAM Vice-Chancellor, Professor Kenneth Matengu, notes that the late Mshingeni’s leadership, research, and mentorship advanced science, improved livelihoods, and left a lasting legacy of excellence across Tanzania and beyond.

“As a distinguished scholar, a professor of botany, and a transformative academic leader, I believe we owe it to him to excel in our work, to promote justice, and to ensure that science is relevant and responsive to the needs of our communities. His impact reached far beyond Tanzania. He pioneered seaweed farming in the country, uplifting livelihoods—especially for women—and significantly contributing to the economy. He was also active in capacity building at this institution. I am sure he was one of the key figures behind what remains the institution’s strongest staff development policy. Because he loved to plant seeds, he also ensured that those seeds were nurtured and properly supported.”
