African Union Commission Chairperson Mahmoud Ali Youssouf urged renewed commitment to continental unity, integration and development while spotlighting water security as a priority for the continent's future.

In a message delivered for Africa Day 2026, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf said the anniversary reflects Africa's long struggle for liberation and dignity, as well as its continued pursuit of the goals outlined in Agenda 2063.

He described Africa Day as both a celebration of the continent's shared heritage and a sign of Africa's growing influence in global affairs, guided by the spirit of Ubuntu and a commitment to solidarity, cooperation and shared humanity.

Youssouf highlighted Africa's permanent membership in the G20 as a historic step toward ensuring the continent participates fully in global economic decision-making.

"Our permanent membership in the G20 marks a historic step towards ensuring that Africa participates fully in global economic decision making."

The AUC chairperson also pointed to ongoing African Union reforms aimed at strengthening the institution's ability to respond effectively to citizens' needs and continental challenges.

Particular emphasis was placed on this year's AU theme focused on sustainable water availability and safe sanitation systems to achieve Agenda 2063. 

Youssouf said water security, climate resilience and public health remain critical to Africa's development ambitions.

He further called for deeper regional integration, stronger responses to conflicts and humanitarian crises, and increased investment in infrastructure, health systems and climate adaptation.

As Africa Day commemorations continue across the continent, Youssouf urged governments, the private sector and civil society to translate the continent's diplomatic gains into practical action that improves livelihoods and drives inclusive growth.
