Windhoek City Councillor Fransina Kahungu has expressed disappointment with some officials who do not attend to public reports on time in order to fix broken infrastructure such as pipes, taps, and toilets.

Kahungu, who was speaking at a public engagement, says maintenance should be done while the institution still has funds to allow residents to pay for the services required.

"Let us not say it's not my department; it's not my job because the moment water is wasted, the more money the municipality will spend on maintenance. I always say there will be a time when the institution will go bankrupt, it can happen if we are not careful. If we are not providing services to these people so that they can also help the municipality, then in the end all of us will be happy."

Samora Machel Constituency residents who showed up for the City of Windhoek's public engagement raised challenges such as an increase in robbery and suicide incidents, a lack of communal toilets and water taps, poor mobile networks, slow waste management, and the need for emergency services, amongst others.

In response, Kahungu says the City of Windhoek is well aware of the challenges experienced and that there are programs and plans in the pipeline to address some of the issues raised.

She also admitted that land ownership is long overdue and that it's just a matter of time before residents can own land.

"The plan is already approved. The municipality will give you all your portion of the land, and you will start signing with the municipality until you get ownership status. Then you and your children can build your houses the way you want them to be."
