The President of the Popular Democratic Movement says with the alarming rate of unemployed young Namibians, many are still finding it tough to fend for themselves, a situation that also renders them unable to contribute to the country's GDP.
Mchenry Venaani said this at a rally held on Sunday at Cincimani in the Zambezi Region.
Venaani, who spoke on various issues including the Fishrot and other corruption cases, said unemployment among young people is a sign that the government is not doing enough to inject into financially viable projects in the agricultural sector in the region.
"Zambezi today is the poorest region in Namibia, but Zambezi has the best land; it has the most potent ecological sites. The Zambezi River, like in Zambia, can feed Namibia. If it can feed the whole of Namibia, every person in Zambezi can have a job, but 22 years after independence, SWAPO has failed to make Zambezi an agricultural hub."
Venaani says for a country to develop, it should be able to produce its own food instead of relying on imports, which robs Namibians of employment opportunities.
"If you want to change your future, if you want to change the trajectory of your life, you must vote for change in 2024. We are ready to bring along change, meaningful change, not to make promises but change that can create the necessary jobs, change that can create the necessary agricultural output in Zambezi so that more people can be absorbed in the labour market, so we can have food security, so that our children can have a better education for themselves."
He also cautioned the party's regional leaders to refrain from only being visible during election times, adding that two years ahead of the 2024 general elections, leaders should be more active.
