AI can infringe on human rights

Artificial intelligence (AI) can infringe on human rights if not properly understood or utilised.

These were some of the sentiments shared by various speakers at the stakeholder engagement on the implementation of UNESCO recommendations on the ethics of AI.

The engagement follows the adoption of the Windhoek Outcome Statement on Artificial Intelligence in Southern Africa last year, aimed at strengthening multistakeholder cooperation and the ethical use of artificial intelligence.

Biotechnology plays important role in national development

Director of Research and Innovation at the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation (MHETI), Dr. Lisho Mundia, says that the Namibian government has long recognised the importance that biotechnology plays in national development, poverty alleviation, and as a catalyst for sustainable economic development.

The government thus, through the MHETI and technical assistance from the Namibian Biotechnology Alliance (NABA), developed the National Biotechnology Policy in 1999.

Amupanda demanded to cease from defamatory allegations against Kandjii-Murangi

Lawyer Clive Kavendji of Kangueehi & Kavendjii Inc. has written to activist Dr. Job Amupanda, demanding that Amupanda cease and desist from posting "false and defamatory" allegations against the Minister of Higher Education, Training, and Innovation, Dr. Itah Kandjii-Murangi.

Dr. Amupanda posted on his social media platforms that the minister has used her office to corruptly use public funds through means of travel allowances in the amount of about N$1,5 million.

Slow movement in implementing Namibian Space Science and Technology Policy

There has been slow movement in implementing the Namibian Space Science and Technology Policy due to obstacles such as a lack of coordination in space science and technology as well as funding.

These remarks were made by the Director of Research and Innovation in the Ministry of Higher Education, Technology, and Innovation, Dr. Lisho Mundia, at a workshop aimed at assessing progress made since the introduction of the policy in 2021.
