The Cuban Embassy in Namibia celebrated the birthday of Cuban revolutionary Fidel Castro at the Fidel Castro Ruz Primary School in Windhoek.

The event was also meant to celebrate the relationship between Namibia and Cuba as well as recognise the role that Cuba played during the country's liberation struggle for independence.

The Cuban Ambassador, Sergio Vigao de la Uz, talked to the learners about the perseverance of Fidel Castro Ruz as a way to inspire them.

"I am talking to you about the achievements of Fidel Castro and his qualities so that you will know how much you can achieve with perseverance, discipline, and faith in the future. As you say in the school anthem, Fidel will be proud to see this extraordinary educational centre that honours his work and his memory."

The unity between Namibia and Cuba was established during the struggle for Namibian independence and grew out of the need to govern the sovereign lines of the two countries.

Looking at present-day Namibia, Ramirez Guerra says he is proud and encourages the learners.

Guerra presented the school with a token of appreciation, which was a picture of Namibia's Founding President Sam Nujoma, and Fidel Castro.

The event was also attended by the Ambassador of Venezuela as well as Namibians who studied in Cuba.
