The Chairperson of the ||Kharas Regional Council, Josef Isaacks, has called for the charges against the Karasburg Mayor, the Management Committee Chairperson, and a staff member in the office of the Karasburg CEO's to be dropped.
Isaacks said this in a media statement following the arrest of the trio yesterday by the Anti-Corruption Commission.
Isaacks said the Karasburg Town Council did not conspire on charges, nor did the mayor abuse her powers to warrant the ACC's intervention.
"As a juristic body, the town council, not the mayor, appoints the staff member in the office of the CEO on a temporary basis, as well as the personal assistant on a temporary basis. Section 27 that the minister invoked doesn't have any application or relevance to temporal appointments. It is a purely administrative and executive function that the council executes, and any party that is aggrieved has the right, according to Article 18 of the Namibian Constitution, to seek redress in a competent court."
ACC Spokesperson Josefina Nghituwamata confirmed the arrests of the two LPM councillors and a senior employee of the Karasburg Town Council.
LPM responded, saying it would fight the charges and had already enlisted a lawyer to attend to the matter.
The suspects have yet to appear in court.
