The Vice Chancellor of the University of Namibia Professor Kenneth Matengu pointed out that a lack of male role models is one of the contributing factors to boys underperforming in education.
Professor Matengu was speaking at the Rundu Campus graduation ceremony.
Of the more than 580 students who graduated from the School of Nursing, Education and Commerce at the Rundu Campus, 66% are female.
"The boys are not doing well in school because they don't have role models, the fathers are absent or they are the ones who invite them to the pubs to help buy things, we cannot build a society like this if we are not the ones to show leadership of our boys, secondly that study shows us that boys and girls tend to learn differently they say they find the way they are being taught in schools very boring, now I am speaking to the future teachers how are you going to make it interesting for the boys that they don't get bored in the class."
Matengu says it is high time the nation takes the boy child issue seriously for the stability of the country.
The Minister of High Education, Technology and Innovation Dr. Itah Kandji-Murangi proposed that the Rundu Campus come up with courses in agriculture.
She said the Kavango Region has fertile land and water resources that can be used to the advantage of the sector and contribute to the growth of the agricultural sector.
The minister also congratulated the graduates and encouraged them to use the skills gained to make a difference in society and help solve its challenges.
