The Minister of Home Affairs, Immigration, Safety and Security, Dr. Albert Kawana, commissioned the construction of the Civic Affairs Regional Office and a Class B Police Station at Katima Mulilo on Wednesday.

The government will spend more than N$100 million on the Civic Affairs Regional Office at Katima Mulilo.

Dr. Kawana reiterated that the project's implementation represents the government's clear commitment to public safety and the efficient provision of civic services.

Dr. Kawana stressed that there is a need to invest in basic infrastructure that will positively impact service provision.

Kawana said Zambezi Region ranks third among the regions with the highest population without birth certificates and second highest in terms of residents lacking identity documents, hence the significance of the regional office.

At the moment, the Katima Mulilo civic registration office operates from a three-bedroom rented house, hosting immigration control, citizenship, and immigration services related to refugees.

The Ministry also commissioned the construction of a Class B Police Station to be called Greenwell Matongo Police Station at Katima Mulilo, set to cost the government N$130 million to put up.

The facility will ease the burden on the Katima Mulilo Police Station, which currently serves more than six locations around the town and more than four compounds at Katima Mulilo.

Police Inspector General Joseph Shikongo thanked the government for consistently prioritising police infrastructure, especially given the high crime rate.

Fencing of the Greenwell Matongo Police Station was done in 2016, but due to financial constraints, construction was postponed.
