UNESCO has emphasised the importance of digital technology in schools.

Speaking to members of the Junior National Council, Fenny Namutenya, who represented UNESCO Country Representative Eunice Smith, outlined both the benefits and challenges of integrating digital tools into education.

Digital technologies provide great opportunities for learners, such as access to a vast amount of information, interactive learning experiences, and the ability to collaborate from different locations.

However, to fully realise these benefits, several key areas such as access, affordability, equity, quality, and policies need attention.

Namutenya emphasised the need to make digital platforms accessible to all learners, including those with disabilities and diverse learning needs.

This involves investing in infrastructure and exploring solutions like mobile learning and community tech centres to ensure every student can thrive.

Many schools and families struggle to afford digital devices and internet access, which can limit learners' opportunities to use these technologies.

Equity is about ensuring that they too, no matter their background or circumstances, have a fair chance to benefit from digital technology.

This means addressing challenges such as cultural and language barriers, special needs, and digital literacy skills.

Policies play an important role as they set the rules for how digital technologies are used in education and can shape the future of learning.

MPs, including Thomas Shipanga, asked about overcoming challenges related to digital technology, such as the lack of assistive technology in special schools.
