The City of Windhoek's election of office bearers had to be postponed to today after some councillors defied the instructions of the presiding officer.
The disruption happened a few minutes after the mayor and the deputy mayor handed over their mayoral regalia on Monday.
The councillors received gifts before the election, which they laid out on the table before them.
When informed by Magistrate Immanuel Udjombala to put their gifts away for the process to start, some of the councillors took theirs out of the chamber.
That resulted in a warning from the magistrate for no one to leave the room, or else the elections would be postponed.
Several councillors disregarded that instruction, leading Magistrate Udjombala to postpone the municipal elections until today.
