Former Justice Minister Sacky Shanghala told the Windhoek High Court that the Namibian Police continues to disregard existing court orders by transporting inmates in overloaded vehicles without safety provisions.

Addressing Judge Marilize du Plessis on Monday, Shanghala described the transportation method as a “metal cage” and said he does not want to become a statistic, referring to the fatal Mariental crash that claimed the lives of correctional officers and NamPol officer.

Shanghala also informed the court of his intention to appeal an earlier judgement by Deputy Judge President Hannelie Prinsloo, dismissing his application to set aside all decisions made by former trial judge Moses Chinhengo in the Fishrot corruption case.

Judge du Plessis dismissed most of the application by Shanghala and two co-accused for the disclosure of additional prosecution material in the Fishrot case.

However, the court ordered the state to provide the accused with an additional printed copy of the evidence already disclosed.

Shanghala and his co-accused remain in custody at the Windhoek Correctional Facility, where the High Court proceedings are being conducted.

The matter will continue for a status hearing next week on Monday.
