Germany has committed N$876 million to projects in Namibia related to sustainable urban development, vocational training, green and sustainable energy, and sustainable natural resources management.
During bilateral talks held in Luderitz this week, Namibia and Germany reaffirmed their long-standing partnership with renewed commitment to deepen their development cooperation.
In his remarks at the conclusion of the bilateral development cooperation discussions, the Director General of the Namibia Planning Commission, Kaire Mbuende, highlighted the core focus of the collaboration on the energy and green industrialisation agenda.
Dr. Mbuende said Namibia has prioritised renewable energy, green hydrogen and critical raw materials as key drivers of industrialisation and economic diversification.
"We have been thinking out of the box and creatively about our cooperation to maximise the benefits to both parties in the midst of officially declining aid resources. We must focus on quality rather than quantity to achieve optimal benefits. We reflect on issues of critical importance to Namibia and equally to Germany: the issue of green transition, critical minerals, renewable energy, smart city urbanisation, but above all, the protection of our natural resources."
Germany's Ambassador to Namibia, Thorsten Hutter, reiterated Germany's commitment to remain a reliable development cooperation partner for Namibia.
"And we will decide jointly on how to continue in the coming months and years. I don't want to be a spoiler and give away when the next consultations take place, but they will take place. And we are glad that the consultations will take place again next year here in Namibia, and then in 2027, as the MC said, they will take place in Germany. So, that is something that we are all looking forward to. But in the meantime, now and between 2026 and 2027, let us get back to work."
Since 1990, Germany's financial and technical support to Namibia has exceeded approximately N$32 billion.
