The late Founding President, Dr. Sam Nujoma, shared a profound connection with the Terrace Bay resort in the Skeleton Coast Park.
The late Dr. Nujoma's last visit to Terrace Bay was in 2021, a place where he would indulge in one of his greatest passions, fishing.
Terrace Bay resort, which is managed by Namibia Wildlife Resorts, is located about 360 kilometres north of Swakopmund.
According to the NWR website, the late Nujoma, upon his arrival at Terrace Bay, would waste little time to get his line in the water.
The website further states that his connection with Terrace Bay was so significant that one of its houses was named after him.
But he had other burning passions, among them education.
This led to the establishment of the Sam Nujoma Primary School at Terrace Bay, a school which he himself inaugurated in 2003.
The institution provides pre- and primary school education up to Grade 3 in its one classroom, housing just over 10 learners.
The entire school is run by one teacher, Julia Hamukwaya, who finds teaching in a multi-grade setup sometimes quite challenging.
"It is not something so easy; balancing curriculum education across 4 grades is challenging, but it pushes me to be very intentional with how I teach. It is not easy, but that is the way, or how I find myself for the benefit of the Namibian child's education. I have to push hard."
The school currently needs a computer and a printer, while the textbooks are also outdated, and the internet connection at the school in a remote setting is not something to speak about.
But teacher Julia is committed, and she is emboldened by the results.
"We have very small meaningful progress, so even though we are teaching multi-grades and one of our biggest achievements so far is ensuring that all learners are able to read and write and count at their appropriate levels, we have also established a very strong learning routine, improved learners' attendance and created a safe learning environment even though we are facing a lot of challenges."
His legacy remains in the ocean waves, the stories told by those who knew him and the fishing lines cast into the waters of Terrace Bay.
