Namibia has paid tribute to former First Lady Penehupifo Pohamba, remembering her as a dedicated nurse, midwife and humanitarian whose life was defined by service to others.

At a special memorial service held at Parliament Gardens on Saturday, President Netumbo Nandi-Ndaitwah, family members and friends reflected on Pohamba's contribution to the country's liberation struggle, public healthcare and the wellbeing of vulnerable communities.

Her contribution to public service was also recognised by President Nandi-Ndaitwah, who said Pohamba's compassion and dedication touched lives beyond Namibia's borders.

She recalled her commitment to rural women, saying she worked to help them live with dignity and never forgot her roots.

"She stood with mothers and children. She stood with those living with disabilities. She stood with families who society too often overlooked. That love as hers always makes her go and focus where the need is more needed."

Former First Lady Monica Geingos, speaking on behalf of the country's First Ladies, remembered Pohamba as a gentle, wise and motherly figure who gave generously without expecting anything in return.

She also acknowledged the guidance and support Pohamba offered her when she assumed the role.

"Pohamba signified consolidation and compassion. She served a Namibia that was building, and she brought warmth, humility, and a deep commitment to the health of mothers and children."

Tributes from friends highlighted how she continued to nurture friendships, making time for shared meals and maintaining close relationships formed long before she became First Lady.

On behalf of the children, Ndapanda Pohamba remembered her mother as someone who cared deeply for all children, particularly those from disadvantaged backgrounds.

"The values Mama shared with the community were the same values she practised at home. She taught us that compassion is not simply something we speak about; it's something we show through our actions. She taught us to correct with love, to help without judgement and to make room for people to grow – those lesser shaped our family, but they also shape the way we remember her today."

A tribute delivered on behalf of her husband, former President Hifikepunye Pohamba, reflected on her role as a wife, mother and participant in the liberation struggle.

Pohamba noted that his wife remained humble considering her accolades.

His tribute was read by Ambassador Tuliameni Kalomoh.

"During our life together, I came to know Penehupifo as a remarkable woman with strong character and still discipline. She tightly held our family together and guided us without being judgemental. She instilled in our children the values of hard work and values of honesty and integrity."

Pohamba was remembered under the theme "A Life of Service, Love and Dedication" - a reflection of her lifelong commitment to healthcare, family and public service.

The memorial brought together tributes from across the country, honouring a woman whose legacy continues through the lives she touched and the causes she championed.
