President Mbumba commends Germany's commitment to Green Hydrogen project

President Nangolo Mbumba has applauded Germany's commitment to the realisation of the Green Hydrogen project and programme in Namibia. 

Dr. Mbumba met with the Energy Envoy of Germany, Rainer Baake, at State House.

The German government has been supporting Namibia's Green Hydrogen programme through funding for private companies to develop projects in different parts of the country.

One such is the company HyIron, established through a partnership of Namibian and German companies that work in the field of renewable energies and engineering. 

Schools celebrate World Earth Day

At least 30 schools in Windhoek celebrated World Earth Day with a call to action to protect the environment and the world.

The celebration of Earth Day holds significance as Namibia is known for its unique ecosystems.

This year, the day was celebrated under the theme Planet vs. Plastics.

Enviromentalist Fransina Kalumbu pointed out the importance of acknowledging environmental issues and promoting sustainable practices.

Agriculture Ministry recommends drought declared an emergency

A newly released report by the Ministry of Agriculture, Water, and Land Reform has recommended that the government declare a drought a national emergency.

This follows the effects of drought findings across the country due to low rainfall.

The assessment was conducted in the seven major northern communal drop-producing regions between February 12 and March 11 this year. 

Maize, millet, sorghum, and wheat are estimated to be 53% lower than the last season's harvest. 

|Khomas/Jiangsu partnership should successfully materialise - McLeod-Katjirua

|Khomas Governor Laura McLeod-Katjirua has called on its administrators to ensure that development initiatives from partnership agreements bear the intended fruits.

The governor made these remarks during a work plan signing agreement between the |Khomas Region and Jiangsu Province of China.

The joint work plan comes as a result of two MoUs, signed in 2015 and 2023 between the |Khomas Region and the Jiangsu Province, as well as the |Khomas Regional Council and the Standing Committee of the Jiangsu Provincial People's Congress.

Kunene VTC to open in June

The Kunene Vocational Training Centre is expected to open for its first intake in June.

This was announced by the Namibia Training Authority's TVET Standards Manager, Amon Haufiku, during a consultative meeting with the community at Khorixas.

Although construction at the centre is not yet fully completed, Haufiku said about 100 trainees and staff members are expected to occupy different workshops and classrooms in June.

Construction of the centre started in 2018, but it was delayed by the challenges brought by the outbreak of COVID-19.

Documentary digs slavery answers at St. Helena island

Windhoek-born Annina van Neel is set to showcase a documentary shedding light on the practice of slavery in the British Overseas Territory of Saint Helena.

The island is said to be the site of thousands of burial grounds belonging to formerly enslaved Africans.

The documentary, titled "A Story of Bones," through poignant storytelling, questions whether current public discourse and actions adequately address the memorialization of these people.

NFBB hosts bodybuilding and fitness qualifier

The Namibia Federation of Bodybuilding and Fitness held its first-ever qualifier event in Swakopmund on Saturday.

The first-ever qualifying event, held on Saturday, was for the IFBB African Championships taking place in Egypt for male athletes and in South Africa for female athletes.

The qualifier event, held at Crossfit Swakopmund, included various bodybuilding categories as well as the IFBB Fitness Challenge.
