Kavango East Governor Hamunyera Hambyuka stated that while independence has granted political freedom, the region continues to encounter various challenges.

Hambyuka was delivering the keynote address for this year's independence celebrations at the Rundu Sports Stadium.

The Governor emphasised that Namibia is free from the shackles of colonialism; constant development requires continuous effort.

"In our region, we continue to face challenges in water provision, youth unemployment, proper housing and infrastructure that must keep pace with a growing population. These challenges remind us that freedom must be protected not only with words, but also with functioning systems and responsible governance."

He said the region's task is to ensure that independence translates into improved living conditions for every family. It doesn't matter if they live in urban neighbourhoods, remote cattle posts, or deep in the forest.

"When we speak about freedom, it must include access to quality education, reliable healthcare, and economic opportunities that allow our young people to remain in the region and build their futures here at home."

The governor told the young people at the gathering that independence is their inheritance.

One of the highlights of the independence celebrations was the cultural performances.
