Etanga residents happy with development

The Kakurukouje Traditional Authority and the inhabitants of Etanga Village have commended the government for its efforts in ensuring that they have access to basic services.

One such development is the electrification of Etanga, considered a major development in the region.

Etanga Village is located about 210 kilometres west of Opuwo in the Epupa Constituency, where basic services have been a challenge for years.

UNDP explores innovative solutions for Africa's development challenges

New strategies are required for Africa's complete development.

As a result, the 2023 United Development Programme (UNDP) Regional Bureau for Africa will explore innovative solutions for Africa's developmental challenges.

The four-day meeting will explore innovative approaches that harness foresight and technology to reclaim Africa's development trajectory as well as assess progress made towards the Sustainable Development Goals.

Improved living standards awaits Khorixas residents

Housing and land delivery for low-income earners in the Kunene Region, including the upgrading of the informal settlements, is taking shape.

At Khorixas, 445 plots were handed over to the residents of the Ada-||Naugu informal settlement to build their houses.

The allocated plots are for 1,025 applicants on a waiting list.

Of these, 56 are categorised for pensioners and 22 for people living with disabilities, while 104 are for the members of the Shack Dwellers Federation, all sold at N$15,00 per square metre.

Gibeon Village Council eliminates bucket toilet system by 90%

The Gibeon Village Council has achieved 90% of its ambition to eliminate the bucket toilet system.

The Council's acting CEO, Rehabeam Amukoto, revealed this in an interview with nbc News. 

Amukoto says the council expects to complete the N$2 million sewer reticulation project by the end of this month to improve sanitation. 

Upon completion, about 60 houses in the village's Lukas Stephanus section will be connected to the sewer reticulation network. 

Development plans of Kayengona village in pipeline

The councillor of the Rundu Rural Constituency, Paulus Mbangu, says plans are in the pipeline to develop Kayengona village, some 18 kilometres east of Rundu. 

Kayengona Beach is a popular destination in the village as it attracts numerous visitors, especially during the summer.

"We are happy to see people flocking to Kahengona; it's a famous village. They are coming here because Kahengona is very peaceful, they are coming here because it is mesmerising with beauty, the landscape is eye-dropping; and the hospitality of the people here in Kahengona is felt by everyone."

Uranium mines comment on Gov export regulations

The ban on exports of critical raw materials is seen as an opportunity for the country's two large uranium mines, Rossing and Husab, to add value.

The managers of the mines say the advancement in technology could make it possible for Namibia, but they questioned what measures the government will put in place to ensure that the requirement is met. The managers of Rossing and Husab Uranium mines were asked by member of parliament, Tjekero Tweya, if they were scared of the government's ban on exports of critical raw materials.

Uranium mine's utility bills questioned

The Chairperson of the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources has asked uranium mines to be truthful in revealing how much of their budget is spent on electricity and water.

Tjekero Tweya believes the cost of the two utilities is too high in Namibia, and that is among the reasons why uranium mines are not making a bigger impact on the country's development. The mines and energy subcommittee under the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Natural Resources visited various mines in the Erongo Region.

Swakopmund mayoral development fund aids schools

The Swakopmund Municipality, through the Mayoral Development Fund, has donated N$200,000 to all schools in Swakopmund.

Mayor Dina Namubes believes education is an important tool to eradicate poverty.

The donation was handed over at a ceremony attended by all the beneficiary schools.

Swakopmund has 20 public and private schools.

Over the year, the Mayoral Fund donated N$1,000 to each of the schools, which is to become an annual contribution to the awarding of the best performers.

Kavango East Region's leadership convened to enhance local economic growth

Regional leadership in the Kavango East Region met with the business community to discuss how to better improve local economic growth and development.

Referred to as the Mayoral Business Forum, the platform brings the local business community under one roof to, amongst other things, foster strong bonds and promote a unified business spirit. This is particularly important ahead of one of the region's biggest events, the Rundu Annual Trade Fair, next month.

Rural sanitation programme boost

The Erongo Regional Council has received N$1.2 million from the central government to support development in rural areas.

Its Chairperson, Benitha Imbamba, says this is an addition to another N$1.2 million the Council budgeted for the current financial year.

Imbamba revealed that about N$961,000 is budgeted for the rural sanitation programme from the council's own funds.

She says the council is busy constructing dry pit latrines to improve sanitation in rural areas.
